47 Meters Down

Ok, ok, ok…We confess. We didn’t have high hopes of this film especially without a Metacritic score.  Our thought is that we will knock a thriller off our list, review it, and go ice skating.  Like the old adage goes, “Never judge a book by its cover.”  Never judge a film by the lack of a Metacritic score.

We were wrong.
The film laid out the story of two sisters, Lisa (played by Mandy Moore) and Kate (played by Claire Holt) head to Mexico for a beach getaway. They met these absolutely gorgeous men that convinced them to go diving to see the sharks. There were several signs that should’ve indicated that it probably wasn’t a good idea: a rusty boat, a sketchy looking captain, a rusty cage, rotten looking bait, and unkempt bathroom. Those damn men with wavy hair and accents had them hypnotized to look past all the warning signals.
33 Meters down it all went to hell, and they found themselves sitting 47 Meters below the surface.

After we listed all of the things we would rather do at the beach than scuba dive, we said a collective “Hell nah” and jumped from our seats. Our opinions changed about this film.
Once again, the crew behind the camera made the film with the visual and sound effects. They made us stop eating our popcorn several times.
Bell Biv Devoe had a song titled “Poison” advising men to “Never trust a big butt and a smile.”  Ladies, never trust wavy hair and an accent. Don’t. If you do, you too might find yourself sitting on the ocean floor. Observe that gorgeous specimen from the shoreline sipping on a shark-inspired cocktail.
I think if Kate and Lisa had to do all over again, they would agree!
From the desk of Dr. Metzger:
A thriller that is PG-13 and less than 90 minutes? I thought to myself “Nah, this is about to be trash”. It wasn’t! It reminded me of 2003’s Open Water in the sense of eeriness in the dark waters below. This film made me do the “startle jump” at least 3 times and I really got into the frightful breathlessness of the characters. Mandi Moore said “I’m so scared” about 47 times but I wasn’t annoyed enough to wish for her to get eaten. This gets a movie ticket because I got legit scared and the twist at the end made me sit fully up in my movie recliner. This also confirms that I’m never going scuba diving.
