I, Tonya

“You can’t hate someone who’s story you know.” – Margaret J. Wheatley.

“I was loved for a minute, then I was hated. Then I was just a punch line.” – Tonya Harding

This is a story of survival. This is the story of a girl who had the cards of life stacked against her and made history.  Not for “the incident” as it is referred to in the film, but because Tonya Harding (played by Margot Robbie) unapologetically played by her own rules.  She just wanted to get a fair shot.  America, we did not give her one.  We marveled at her domination to make history as the first woman to land a Triple Axel in competition.
We mocked her, we attacked her, we trolled her in the absence of social media.  The New York Times was right, we do owe her an apology.  This story painfully but beautifully, tells the story of abuse, manipulation, and survival in a way that makes the audience stop and soak in her story. I cried.
How can we pay her back?  Allison Janney wins an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and Margot Robbie scores at least a nomination for Best Actress. “I, Tonya” will secure a nomination for Best Picture.  I am calling it now.
From the desk of Dr. Metzger:
“I, Tonya” is a heart wrenching story of survival. It also was a lesson of how the people around you can influence your destiny…choose wisely. You see Tonya Harding fight literally to the end. Margot Robbie’s role as Harding definitely took her to another tier of acting. I initially said she was too “Hollywood pretty” for the grit of this role but I was wrong. Will she get nominated for an Oscar? Probably not. Did she do a hell of a job playing Tonya Harding? Absolutely. Speaking of Oscar nods, Allison Janney needs to get her speech ready. I have loved her as mom since Juno ( even in Minions too) and her wit and spot-on performance continues to shine in “I, Tonya”.
Spoiler alert:
There’s a ton of domestic violence in this film to the point where I covered my eyes in some scenes.
Random tangent: In the scene where Tonya said she would rather go to jail than not skate again, I was taken a back. Skating was her life.
