Book Club

Is a new “50 Shades” book coming out soon?

Tuesday evening and the theater was full of women.  The secret was out…they were all apart of book clubs that read and socialized outside of the book club meetings. We can assume they read the “50 Shades” trilogy.  This movie was a commercial for the books with several A-List actresses as the spokeswomen. There must be another book coming out.

I fully endorse women exploring their sexuality, particularly for women post-menopausal.  Where the film could have dug deeper into the role of sexuality for women, it played it too safe and turned the scenes where sexuality could be explored into a PG-13 Hallmark film.  Women loves movies. Women can pack a theater on a weeknight, and we need real stories to go with our wine and popcorn…especially if you are centering a plot around the “mommy porn” trilogy.  We watch enough Disney films.

From the desk of Dr. Metzger:

If I knew this movie was going to be an ad to read “50 Shades of Grey”, I would have skipped it. They didn’t just mention one book…they mentioned the whole “50 Shades” trilogy MULTIPLE times with reading of excerpts and character mention. That ruined the whole thing for me. I don’t pay money to watch a commercial for 90 minutes. I’m a huge fan of films about love and sex after 50. Films like “It’s Complicated” and “Something’s Gotta Give” got it right but “Book Club” did not. Diane Keaton and Candice Bergen are my girls too but this film was wack.

P.S. Don Johnson and Andy Garcia still have the effortless cool…it did not fade with age.
