See Jordan…this is why I can’t mess with you.

It’s 2am and I am still awake. I already look at some people with a side-eye. Thanks Jordan for making me be suspect of these well-meaning kumbaya events. This film was good that I will see it again because you got me good. Now, I have to find all the clues. Even though you scared me out of a good night sleep…

If you are looking for “Get Out” this ain’t it, BUT this is what I love about Jordan Peele as a filmmaker…each project is unexpected.  Jordan, I cannot quit you and your imaginatively twisted stories.

It was good but unfortunately not great. For all the hype, I thought it would have been scarier for one. There could have been 30 minutes shaved off the running time. Horror movies are just not meant to be long because it’s too difficult to hold the suspense. However, Jordan Peele is my guy so let me say some good things.

Lupita Nyong’o murdered the role (pun intended). It actually was two roles that she killed. She’s one of the top 5 most talented actresses in the game, hands down. I also love films that have hidden messages that make me research after the credits. Peele definitely delivered on that front, similar to “Get Out”.  He also had some commentary on racial dynamics that were subtle yet effective. Winston Duke was a miscast as the dad (ok, that’s the last bad thing I will say). I did see my horror rules reinforced in “Us”. Kids being alone in fairs always go bad (remember “Big”) and any song can be made into a haunting tune. I won’t ever hear “I got 5 on it” the same.

I’m glad I saw it. We see this happen after brilliant debuts.  If your first swing is a home run (“Get Out”), it’s tough for you hit it out the park the second time. “Us” made it to second base at best.
