“Everybody is a star…” – Sly and the Family Stone
“Teen Spirit” shines a spotlight on manufactured televised talent shows. When the film began I thought to myself, “I have seen this movie several times. Can these studios get more creative with the story lines?” I was pleasantly surprised this film gave the reality of manufactured stardom a big middle finger, and delivered something original. Elle Fanning in the role of a shy singer was effective and believable, but I wanted to see more of how the shy teenager handled a rise to stardom. I wanted to learn more about Vlad (played by Zlatko Buric), which a missing element of the film. This film could have lasted 15-20 more minutes. Watching it a home warrants a dance party with Robyn on full blast.
From the desk of Dr. Dion Metzger:
I liked it! The “came from nothing” story never gets old and I get inspired every time. I was fully entertained and had the added bonus of featuring one my favorite music genres (including two songs from my running playlist). “Teen Spirit” had heart and I was here for it. Elle Fanning also did all her own vocals which were not too shabby. That Fanning family has some gifted DNA.
