Good Boys

If you are not a pubescent boy, do not bother.  This was an introductory raunchy comedy for that demographic.

Good boys was so bad….so bad. Kids cursing for no reason combined with sex toys and drugs isn’t amusing. The people in front of us walked out 20 minutes in, I envied them.

Where’d You Go Bernadette?

After 9pm, the quality of the film determines whether I take an expensive nap or fully engaged.  I slept through at least half of the film.  Not a strong enough script to compete against the book.  Read the book.

From the desk of Dr. Dion Metzger:

Nobody can do anxiety like Cate Blanchett. Despite her accurate depiction, “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” didn’t even come close to Blanchett’s Oscar-winning role as the troubled socialite in “Blue Jasmine”.  I’ve said it before…not all books are meant to be translated to film. This New York Times Bestseller was a flop on screen. It’s always a little painful to see an award winning actress in a subpar script. I wouldn’t bother watching this one but shout out for the psychiatric references in this film actually being accurate (adjustment disorder, tardive dyskinesia, voluntary hospitalization…oooh la la).

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Tarantino has been called out in the past for being problematic, and I was fully prepared for that to happen again.  Perhaps it was the subject matter or personal enlightenment, but this was Tarantino laying out a fairy tale.  This was an imaginative take on a horrific story in Hollywood history.  Tarantino imagined how different life would have been if an actor and stunt double who were past their prime became the heroes and changed Hollywood history.  This film was well done, but like many of Tarantino’s films they are best screened at home.  Especially this one because you will want to do Google searches while screening.

PS: Pitt and DiCaprio are aging well.

Confession: This is my first Quentin Tarantino film. I have no shame in saying Leonardo DiCaprio is the reason I convinced Lauren to see it. This is actually Leo’s second film with Tarantino but you know I wasn’t seeing “Django”.  Anyways, I loved “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. I was fully entertained, even if I had to cover my eyes during the violent scenes (remember this is my first Tarantino). Leo is one of the greatest actors of our time. It’s been four years since his last (and award winning) performance in “The Revenant” and he came back without missing a step. This film also passed the parking lot test where I was still asking Aziz and Lauren questions about it up to our car doors. I love Old Hollywood and I love Leo. I loved this and now I’m going to check out “Reservoir Dogs” because I’m intrigued by Tarantino’s storytelling.

What does Aziz say?

“That was the best acting I’ve ever seen in my whole life” – Trudi

That line from talented 10 year old actress Julia Butters summed up my expectations for this star studded cast. Leo DiCaprio did not disappoint in his performance as actor Rick Dalton. It should be noted that I’m a big Tarantino fan & fascinated with Hollywood crime stories. The backdrop of the Manson Murders & Tarantino’s ability to make compelling characters was just what I came for. Even though the run time was well over 2 and a half hours I didn’t feel like there were any lulls in action throughout the movie. Climatic ending kept you on the edge of your seat.
